It’s a tool like a calculator."

Johnson defines it succinctly: "Supply chain resilience basically means it has the ability to allow continuity of care in the face of ebbs and flows of supply management problems... We see it every day. We've seen it in COVID."

Johnson provides an example of how 3D printing can be leveraged to address these challenges: "3D print is a beautiful way to service rural areas, especially for specialty items... We have a central repository of 3D print items that are in a catalog and the 3D printers go grab the item and print it out locally."

Looking ahead, the role of supply chain management is expected to evolve rapidly. Johnson notes that Canadian healthcare systems are at a pivot point: "Most Canadian health care systems now have or are about to replace their healthcare information systems... The new systems will have integration with suppliers, where all information systems are connected."

"We have a short window here now to develop these systems to be resilient. So we don't have another COVID... Supply chain was a contributor to some of those issues," Johnson warns.
